Mission of Education
Boundless Love : Education, A Lifetime Mission
"The role of education is to provide a proper guidance to children. If a person deviates from the right path in life, it will take a lot more time and effort to guide them back on the right track. Therefore, in educating children, we must start with character building. If the young are not guided in the right direction, they will be ill-disciplined. Tzu Chi's Mission of Education, which starts from early childhood all the way to university level, aims to nurture and grow children into adulthood through an education filled with love."
Dharma Master Cheng Yen
A Compherensive and Holistic Education

Therefore, she came up with a decision to start the mission of education. As such, in the spirit of selfless giving, Tzu Chi is committed to establish a comprehensive and complete education system, with the hope of nurturing a talented young generation who would serve the society with selfless love. Master Cheng Yen was firm in her conviction in provide a quality education focusing on character building and academic abilities.
The Tzu Chi Hospital in Hualien, Taiwan, was established in 1986. During that era, economic growth was growing rapidly in Asia (Taiwan was among of them). Yet, there were news reports about young aboriginal girls in rural Eastern Taiwan engaging in inappropriate work, a situation revealing the existence of poverty among those living in remote areas. To increase the workforce in nursing, as well as improve the education standards and employment prospects of the aboriginal people living in rural Eastern Taiwan, the Tzu Chi College of Nursing was set up three years later in 1989. It was an important milestone sowing the first seeds for Tzu Chi's mission of education.
